compact, composable. Read how.

A well-designed outdoor kitchen, which can be used as an extra space of the house, does not just come from adding few element to the garden or terrace: it is the result of a project.

How to start designing your dream outdoor kitchen?

There are two essential observation: understanding the available space and organizing it. Just like internal rooms, the design logic makes a difference when it transforms a set of modules into a coherent space, pleasant to use and live.
If we work in a garden, the situation usually offers more design freedom. It will be possible to create island configurations, with space to move, and a larger outdoor living project, which integrate the kitchen with a dining area and lounge area.
Normally the terrace is smaller, so linear solutions are better, because they allow for free movement. Compact design are also ideal, offering all the essential functions while optimizing every single centimeter.
The porch can be a hybrid space between the two, with one major advantage: sheltered from rain and direct light, it allows for more consistent use of the kitchen and a greater range of material choices, while remaining a true external space.
In all three cases, the starting point is modularity. With Arredo3's Aura collection, for example, we work on compositions of three or four modules. In this way we meet the needs of each space, without compromises.

How to design a practical outdoor kitchen?

A functional outdoor kitchen follows the same rules as an indoor one. There is a need for a preparation area, a cooking area and a washing area, each well accessible, with everything you need at your fingertips. This’s why our collections, even the indoor ones, are modular: they adapt the kitchen to the available space, without compromise any function. With Aura, for example, we design linear or island kitchens, which always support suitability and they have a visual impact. We define the focal point around which the entire outdoor conviviality naturally unfolds.

Durable, quality materials for outdoor

An outdoor kitchen is exposed to sun, rain, temperature changes and humidity. Sometimes even saltiness. Materials must therefore meet the highest standards, chosen through strict criteria that go beyond aesthetics. Settling for compromises is not an option.
Characteristics are always the same: aluminium for the structure, stainless steel for the parts in contact with water and food, ceramic plates for the countertops. It's not a random formula. Aluminium is lightweight, durable and recyclable. Stainless steel does not corrode, does not absorb smells, is hygienic. Ceramics —such as Laminam and Abitum that we use in Aura— are compact, easy to clean and they can replicate the aesthetics of marble and stone with a high-quality finish.
We do not suggest porous surfaces, untreated wood, or materials not certified for outdoor use because they deteriorate quickly when exposed to bad weather compromising both aesthetic and functionality.

What should a modern and functional outdoor kitchen look like?

For Arredo3, there are also three 'must-haves' for the outdoor kitchen. First, high-quality materials, to which we dedicate an in-depth section in this blog post (see above); second, dedicated and well-designed spaces for organizing dishes, pots, and everything else you need, as well as for washing, preparing, and cooking food; third, high-end appliances. For Aura, we select the latter from the professional sector, all in stainless steel: gas hobs, barbecues, and electric plates, including the one for healthy teppanyaki cooking—high-temperature and low-fat, perfect for meat, fish, and vegetables.

How to create an elegant and welcoming outdoor kitchen?

An elegant outdoor kitchen is built on the coherence between its components. The most common mistake is placing pieces that don't communicate each other: kitchen, table and chairs in different styles. Arredo3's approach is to think the outdoor as a unified space. With Aura, we work on essential, clean lines and we match it with tables and chairs in order to create harmonious visual continuity between the elements. Even better if there is continuity between inside and outside. It's not about replicating the same materials, but about maintaining a coherence of palettes and proportions that makes the outdoor feel like an integral part of the home. When this balance is achieved, the outdoor space doesn't seem added; it feels like it has always been there. It gains his own completed identity and becomes a place to live as long as possible. That is exactly the effect we want to achieve.

Maintain an outdoor kitchen over time

The protective cover for an outdoor kitchen is a wise choice. While most people will still choose the most durable materials for their outdoor kitchen, an extra bit of care will preserve them even better over time. It also makes reopening for the season much quicker and easier if the outdoor kitchen is only used for part of the year. Why complicate things? Our Aura outdoor kitchen, for example, offers an optional protective cover made of outdoor technical fabric, complete with fastening straps to keep it securely in place against wind and rain.

Do you want the outdoor kitchen equipped just for you?

To create a dream outdoor kitchen, perfect for the spaces of your home, the starting point is specking with someone who know both the available opportunities and the materials and knows how to develop a design with semplicity and good taste.
